RECONNAÎTRE L'ÉCRITURE

Usually, writing is seen as a conventional system. Without this system, writing seems meaningless. As Ferdinand de Saussure claims in his Course in General Linguistics, ‘the sign has no inherent meaning, it is, taken by itself, empty, void, absent. The sign has no life apart from the system or “structure” that frame it’. However, we don’t need to know what a piece of writing means linguistically to identify it as writing. Therefore, what makes it possible to recognize the shapes of both known and unknown writing system as a writing system? This is the main question that led my research for writing my master's thesis.
